You can sum up Bernie Herpin in three words: Faith, Family and Freedom.
Bernie was born in August 1943, in St. Petersburg, Florida. At an early age, his parents instilled in him the beliefs that help form his strong faith in God. As Bernie says, “I try to live my beliefs and my faith in everything I do.”
For 50 years, he and his wife Linda have attended Our Saviors Lutheran Church, which sits in the heart of the 11th state senate district.
In the early 1960s, he met and was married to Linda Elaine (Bjornerud) of Colorado Springs. This summer, they celebrated 49 years of marriage.
Linda has been a resident of Colorado Springs since 1952 and is a graduate of Wasson High School. She completed 40 years with AT&T in 2012.
Together, they chose to make Colorado Springs their home. Here, they raised three daughters and have lived in the district for the last 34 years. Bernie’s family continues to grow. Now, Bernie and Linda have seven beautiful grandchildren, as well.
In addition to his wedding vows, Bernie Herpin took an oath to defend and uphold our Constitution. That is an oath he’s been keeping for nearly half a century.
In August 1965, Bernie enlisted in the United States Navy. After schooling and serving on the USS Simon Bolivar (SSBN-641), he was selected for the Navy Enlisted Scientific and Education Program and attended the University of Kansas. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy.
Bernie served onboard the USS John Marshall (SSBN-611) and USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601) and at the Naval Submarine Training Facility (Pacific) with duty stations in New London, CT; Charleston, SC; Vallejo, CA; and Pearl Harbor, HI.
In 1980, he transferred to the US Air Force and was assigned to the Headquarters, North American Aerospace Defense Command, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He retired from military service as a Captain in 1985 and that same year graduated from Webster University with a Master of Arts degree in Computer Resource Management.
Since 1985, Bernie has worked in the private-sector as a defense contractor supporting the Air Force.
His service didn’t stop with his military career. Bernie has been a volunteer for the Colorado Springs Police Department for 27 years. In March 2006, Bernie was called upon to lead when he was appointed to the Colorado Springs City Council where he served for a total of 5 years.
Now, Bernie Herpin looks to use his life experiences to fight for our interests in Denver.
